Bridging the Gap: Simplifying Complex Topics for Youth Engagement
The RYE Youth Seminars were designed to bridge the gap between complex policy discourse and youth understanding. Four seminars have been held to date, engaging youth from ten governorates across the country. With a balanced participation of approximately 60% males and 40% females, the seminars bring together young leaders from diverse fields, including civil society, academia, political activism, and the private sector, fostering inclusive and dynamic discussions. The seminars prioritize accessibility, acknowledging Yemeni youth's diverse educational and professional backgrounds. By breaking down technical jargon and presenting comprehensive background explanations, participants can fully engage in discussions on topics such as public revenue challenges, the impact of climate change on agriculture, and the empowerment of local authorities.
A Platform for Youth Participation
Each seminar focuses on a specific policy brief derived from the RYE’s extensive research and discussions. For instance:
- Seminar 1 (February 2024): This session explored challenges to Yemen’s public revenues, based on findings from the ninth Development Champions Forum. Participants explored the causes of revenue decline, potential policy solutions, and the impact of conflict on public finances. Interactive discussions enabled youth to share insights and advocate for reforms.
- Seminar 2 (April 2024): Centered on empowering local authorities to lead economic development, this seminar is built on recommendations from the tenth Development Champions Forum. Participants looked into the role of local authorities in fostering sustainable economic development and discussed strategies to enhance collaboration among stakeholders.
- Seminar 3 (August 2024): Addressing the impact of flooding on agricultural communities, this session highlighted the challenges of climate change for food production in Yemen. Youth participants explored mitigation strategies, community responses, and the roles of local organizations in managing crises.
Fostering Dialogue and Collaboration
A defining feature of the seminars is their interactive format. Presentations by experts are followed by dynamic Q&A sessions, where youth actively engage by asking questions, sharing experiences, and debating solutions. This participatory approach not only enhances understanding but also empowers participants to envision their roles in shaping Yemen’s future.
Transformative Outcomes
The impact of the seminars is apparent in the feedback from participants. Surveys conducted before and after each session show a significant increase in knowledge and satisfaction:
- Knowledge Gains: Across all seminars, participants reported improved understanding of the topics discussed. For example, 88% noted enhanced knowledge about empowering local authorities and significant learning on other themes.
- Satisfaction Levels: Feedback consistently highlights the excellence of facilitation and the relevance of the information provided. For example, 75% of attendees in Seminar 2 rated the content as advanced and impactful.
- Future Focus: Participants expressed strong interest in continuing such engagements, suggesting topics like renewable energy, climate change adaptation, and economic opportunities for peacebuilding.
Building a Resilient Future
The Rethinking Yemen’s Economy Youth Seminars emphasize the transformative potential of youth empowerment in Yemen. By equipping young individuals with knowledge and fostering dialogue, the initiative inspires them to contribute actively to rebuilding a resilient and inclusive Yemen. These seminars not only address current challenges but also plant the seeds for a generation that will lead Yemen toward peace and prosperity.
As the Rethinking Yemen’s Economy initiative, funded by the European Union, continues its mission, the Youth Seminars remain a testament to the power of education and community engagement in driving change. Together with the energy and ideas of Yemen’s youth, a brighter future is within reach.
