Thematic Workshops
Workshop to address issues encountered by the fisheries sector in Yemen
November 25, 2019 - November 28, 2019 Mukalla, Yemen
The Rethinking Yemen’s Economy initiative conducted a local engagement workshop in Mukalla, Hadramawt, on November 26-28, 2019, to address issues encountered by the fisheries sector in Yemen. Participants discussed how to increase productivity, job creation and value chain enhancement within the fisheries industry in Yemen, and ways to address exportation problems.
The Rethinking Yemen’s Economy initiative’s local engagement workshops bring together local experts from different governorates to discuss issues of relevance on a local and national level. The fisheries workshop brought together representatives from the Development Champions Forum, fisheries unions, fisheries associations, the private sector, academics, and civil society organizations working on fisheries-related programs from Hadramawt, Al-Mahra, Shabwa, Hudaydah and Aden. Over three days, they identified challenges facing the fisheries industry in Yemen, solutions to address these challenges and mechanisms to implement these solutions. They also identified relevant stakeholders on various levels.
These discussions resulted in the production of a policy brief, Developing Yemen’s Fishing Industry, which lays out the challenges facing the fishing industry in Yemen and proposes solutions and recommendations.
