Assistant Professor and Lecturer at Sana’a University. Mutawakel has lectured in Sana’a University since 1986, in the Department of Literature in the English Language and at the Center for Gender and Development.

Co-founder of the Youth Leadership Development Foundation, established in 1998. She has chaired the foundation’s board of directors since 2001, based on her firm belief in the foundation’s vision “that Yemen has effective and skilled young leaders, both female and male, who play an important leadership role in community development and contribute to making a better world.”
 
Mutawakel holds a doctorate in gender and literature from Tilberg University, Holland.
